Who Was St. Joan of Arc? Faith, Courage, and Her Mission from God

St. Joan of Arc is one of the most extraordinary saints in the history of the Church—a teenage girl who changed the course of a nation through her faith, courage, and unwavering trust in God.

The Story of St. Joan of Arc

Born in 1412 in a small village in France, Joan was an ordinary peasant with an extraordinary calling. As a young woman, she began to experience visions of saints, including St. Michael the Archangel, St. Catherine of Alexandria, and St. Margaret. Through these visions, she believed God was calling her to help lead France during the Hundred Years’ War and support the rightful king, Charles VII.

At a time when women had no role in military leadership, Joan obeyed God’s call with boldness. Still in her teens, she convinced military leaders to let her accompany the French army. Clad in armor and carrying a banner bearing the name of Jesus, Joan inspired troops not just with strategy, but with faith. Her presence helped turn the tide of the war, most notably at the Siege of Orléans.

But Joan’s mission came at a cost.

She was eventually captured, put on trial, and falsely accused of heresy. Despite intense pressure, she refused to deny the voices she believed were from God. At just 19 years old, Joan of Arc was martyred—burned at the stake in 1431. Years later, the Church declared her innocent, and in 1920 she was canonized as a saint.

So why does St. Joan of Arc still matter today?

Her life is a powerful reminder that God often calls ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Joan had no formal education, no power, and no status—yet she trusted God completely. Her courage didn’t come from confidence in herself, but from confidence in her mission.

In a world that often pressures us to stay comfortable or silent, St. Joan challenges us to listen for God’s voice and act on it—even when it’s difficult or misunderstood.

She also reminds us that faith is not passive. Joan didn’t just believe—she acted. She stepped into uncertainty, faced opposition, and remained faithful to the very end.
